Pickleball for Beginners in JB
Pickleball is easier to learn than tennis, faster than badminton, and more social than both. If you have not played yet, here is what you need to know before your first session in JB.
What You Need
Nothing, really. Most JB courts rent paddles for RM5 to RM10 and balls are included. Wear court shoes, running shoes work fine. Bring water. That is it.
The Basics
The court is smaller than a tennis court. You serve underhand diagonally. There is a no-volley zone near the net called the kitchen. You cannot volley from inside it. Games go to 11, win by 2.
That is really it. Most beginners can rally within 20 minutes of picking up a paddle.
Where to Start in JB
JuzDink Pickleball is the obvious first choice. They offer a free 15-minute intro session before your first booking. Staff are helpful and the air-con means you are not overheating while figuring out the rules.
D Pickle Zone runs beginner classes on a rotating schedule. Worth checking their Instagram for the current schedule before going.
Forum Tebrau is cheap enough that making mistakes does not feel painful. Good for just turning up, paying RM20/hr, and figuring it out at your own pace.
Tips for Your First Session
Keep the ball low over the net. Move to the kitchen line after your serve. Do not try to smash everything. Placement beats power at beginner level. Most importantly, just get rallying. The game clicks fast once you are moving.
Finding Other Players
The Johor Bahru Pickleball Fanatics Facebook group is active and welcoming. The Reclub app lists open play sessions at venues around JB, which is a good way to show up to a game without needing to bring four people yourself.
